IT’S ONLY SKIN DEEP!

 Did you know there are three categories of aging? There are three factors that are the reasons why we age.

The first is biological aging.

Unfortunately, there is not too much that we can do about this one. It is simply a fact of life that as we age, our skin no longer functions optimally as it did in the past. There is no fountain of youth, so to speak. Genetics play a big role in how fast our skin shows signs of aging as well. Fortunately, the next two factors can be controlled to some extent.


The second is environmental aging.

How many times have we been told and told again that constant sun exposure is bad for our skin? Not only does the sun speed up the aging process, it is also the culprit for causing skin cancer. Using sunscreen is one of the most effective ways to combat this environmental aggressor. Now I don’t mean just a dab! You actually need to slather a good amount on for you to get the full benefit of an SPF. I never leave my house without sunscreen. I am currently using Perricone MD’s Photoplasma. It has an SPF of 30, which is sufficient for the type of sun exposure I get on a regular basis. If you are going to be at the beach all day, 35 to 45 SPF is advisable, and you must reapply every 30 minutes to an hour depending on how wet you are getting or perspiring. There is an option for every type of skin as well, so finding one that will suit you is not an impossible task. Another environmental aggressors that some may not think about too often are pollution, harsh weather, and cigarette smoke! These free radicals break down lipids and collagen. Antioxidants are combatants against free radicals. Using a face cream with added antioxidants is a win, win! You can kill two yellow jackets with one electric fly swatter! Incidentally, the aforementioned Perricone MD cream I mentioned I used, has a good amount of antioxidants.


The third is mechanical aging.

This one is probably the easiest type of aging to avoid. You must simply do what I have done and rigorously train yourself to do the following. Sleep flat on your back and never let the sides of your face touch your pillow,lest you wake up with pillow squish in the morning. After years and years you will notice that weird indentation like fold going across your cheek!  No squinting, ever! Try to show as little emotion as possible. Do not smile too often or else your nasolabial folds will show definition that much sooner. No, and I repeat NO, DUCK LIPS!!! It will give you fine lines around your mouth. No resting your cheek in your hand either. Okay, okay, a little much I know! But seriously, it wouldn’t hurt to adopt some of my torturous practices as your own.
